Genealogy

Although this site cannot offer much direct help to those seeking information on ancestors, there is a Village Forum which has quite an active Genealogy section. I would suggest that you pose any questions you may have on that. Unfortunately we have found it necessary to require registration and confirmation of your email address before you can do so. This is only to block spammers from registering, an increasing problem for all forum administrators! Your email address will NOT be used for any other purpose.

Many people ask me genealogy questions, but whilst I am always happy to make contact with those using this site, I rarely can answer the questions, but those on the forum often can.

A few links which may be of help are listed below.

St Bees Registers

The old St Bees Parish Registers cover the period from 1538 to 1837 and are available as printed transcripts for baptisms, marriages and burials both at the office below and at St Bees Library. The more recent ones are held in the St Bees Priory and access can be arranged via the Vicar.

Other useful links -

e-mail whitehaven.record.office@cumbriacc.gov.uk

An additional resource, covering a larger area is the Cumbria Archive Service

A recent addition you may not have seen but those on the forum recommend is the Cumbrian Manorial Records site - http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/projects/manorialrecords/index.htm

Finally, the 1901 UK Census is available at Census Online

Happy hunting!
