St Bees Priory

Old Celtic Cross

Before the days of individual stones, one cross would stand in a graveyard for all those buried there. This cross is one such and is one of the oldest carved stones in the parish dating from about the 10th century. The head of the cross has been removed and only the shaft remains, but the Celtic designs can still be seen. See Historic stones of the Priory and Dragon Stone, for more about ancient sculpture.
