George Dixon and "Steeple" Jackson.

Rev james Jackson with climbing polePass through the gap in the wall and on the left is the pink granite stone of George Dixon, civil engineer, and his son, George, an influential figure in 20th century organ design, and co-designer of the St Bees Willis organ.

Further down is the sandstone headstone to Rev'd James Jackson (pictured on right, posing with his mountaineering equipment). Born in Millom, he fought against Napoleon, then attended St. Bees School, trained for the clergy at St. Bees Theological College, (he was the first enrolled student) and was vicar of Rivington, Heastone of Steeple Jackson - Patriarch of the PillaritesLancashire for 33 years. He retired to live in Sandwith, and despite his age, became a pioneering rock climber, climbing Pillar Rock in Ennerdale several times, the first time at the age of 79. In 1878 he fell and was killed during his third ascent of Pillar Rock and is buried here at St. Bees
