St Bees Priory
Priory Paddock
Pass through the gate at the bottom of the modern graveyard. Formerly part of the Vicars's Glebe, this area was earmarked for graveyard extension and was the site of two archaeological digs in 1979-1980, which revealed signs of medieval farmsteads and the medieval Priory precinct wall. Leather and wooden objects were also found. However, this area proved too wet for graveyard use. Instead, it has been made into a managed wetlands garden with the small circular pond as a centrepiece.
This pond is thought by some to be a stone cistern from monastic times, but has no evidence of monastic use, and may only be a rather attractive garden feature from the 1800's.
There is a local interpretation board.
There is a stone here commemorating the evacuation of Mill Hill School to St. Bees 1939 -1945.
