St Bees Priory

Former Lady Chapel

Old College Hall South sideThis shot is taken from what would have been the Lady Chapel of the monastic church. The large arches connecting to the monastic chancel have been filled and windows inserted, but these would have been open when the Lady Chapel was in use. It appears the Lady Chapel may have fallen into disuse before the Dissolution of the Priory as old prints show the arches bricked up but the building roofless. The elaborate mouldings at the right end are evidence of a large east window. It was in this area that the St Bees Man was found in a vault in 1981 during an archaeological dig. The dig revealed the "night stairs" at the West End of the ruined wall, which the monks would use from the dormitory to attend the night services. To the south of this area is the "New College Hall", built in 1863 to handle the expansion of the Theological College. This is now parish rooms. The ruined wall is all that remains of the extensive monastic buildings, which would have covered the area south of the Priory almost to the fence.
