Heritage Open Days - 10 to 13 September, 2009

"Heritage Open Days celebrates England's fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors, ranging from castles to factories, town halls to tithe barns, parish churches to Buddhist temples".

St Bees will be taking part with both the mediaeval Priory Church of St Mary and St Bega (still the working Parish church of St Bees) and the relatively more modern Methodist Chapel being open (as they are every other day in the year) to welcome visitors. On these special days, there will be "extras" laid on for our visitors.

In the case of the Priory, in addition to the beautiful church and the usual displays which include the famous St Bees Man, the village History Group will be providing guides to answer your questions and tell you more about the fascinating history of the Priory, the Village, the Theological College and St Bees School. And refreshments will also be provided!

The Methodist Chapel, dating back to 1860, on the Main Street will also be open these days and visitors will be able to view the recent refurbishments and enjoy the refreshments that will be available.
