Beaches

St Bees has been awarded an ENCAMS Seaside Award recognising the cleanliness of the area. There are two main points of access, at the Seacote Hotel, and at Seamill Lane.

Main beach at St BeesThe beach is gently sloping and generally free from dangerous currents. However, as always, caution should be exercised when in the water, particularly with off-shore winds. The beach is a magnificent shingle with dozens of varieties of rock sloping down to good red sand, and extends southwards for about a mile or so. The sandy areas are accessible at all times except for 2 or 3 hours on either side of high tide, when only the shingle is clear of the water.

You are permitted to walk dogs on the beach but please clean up after them. Last year we were threatened with a ban on dogs on the beach which was blocked by a local outcry from the many responsible dog owners who use the beach regularly. Please don't fuel any further attempts by the authorities to introduce such a ban.

A slipway is available at the Seacote beach for launching & retrieving boats only. Cars must be returned to the Car Park and are permitted on the beach only for the purpose of launching and retrieving boats. It is unwise to leave cars on the beach - it has been proved on a few occasions that they do not float!

The access road & slipway must be kept clear at all times for the RNLI Lifeboat.
