THE FIRST ELEVEN

Twelve Pieces of Cricketing Verse
and an

‘Extra’

Neville Denson

Neville Denson has lived in St.Bees since 1970. In his retirement he has written on a  variety of topics and his work, in both prose and verse, has been widely-published in newspapers and magazines and on radio.

This book contains a collection of some of his verses on cricket.

Illustration of cricket poems bookletMost of the pieces have previously been published in a number of books, magazines etc. – including The Cricketer,
Wisden Cricket Monthly, the MCC Anthology of Cricket Verse and many of Nico Craven’s books:
and Cricketing Compassion was read by Ronnie Corbett at a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie, cricketer and former head boy at Eton, at St.Paul’s Cathedral.

A press review described the book as ‘witty, poignant and evocative…pure and enjoyable nostalgia’ and said that it ‘captured the essence of a more genteel but nevertheless wonderful age of great cricket’.

This extract is from Cricketing Compassion –

His bowling was atrocious
He couldn’t hit the sticks
He’d sixteen no-balls, fourteen wides
And none for ninety-six;
But everyone took pity on
This ageing man of spin,
And said that dropping him would be
A shame, a crime, a sin.

And this from Season’s End –

The sun’s low in the sky now,
Days early turn to nights,
The season soon will die now,
Tired men play out the rites…..

The price of the book is £2.50 plus 75p post and packing (plus 20p per additional copy) and all profits will go to West Cumbria Hospice at Home.
