Getting to St Bees This is probably the most common question I receive - how do I get to St Bees? For full details, see separate Travel section. If coming from overseas, your choice of airports are Manchester, Glasgow, London and two or three other airports. Then you have to get to St Bees. In most cases that means a train journey, and there is a choice of routes. From the south, choosing the route via Barrow is undoubtedly the most scenic one, as the train passes along the coast. But there are fewer trains. From the north, via Carlisle, more trains but the views leave a bit to be desired in many places. By road is the easiest in many ways - you can pick your own times, but if you are going on the Coast to Coast walk, you need to think what you are going to do with your car. Two or three of the hotels or B&Bs offer parking facilities. If you are just going to tour the area, then a car is almost essential. Public transport is available but it does restrict you considerably. Whichever way you come, you will be made most welcome and we hope you will enjoy your stay. For full details on each of these options, see Travel |
