St Bees Village History & Priory Project

Click to view First Draft of Interpretive Plan

What is it?

The History project aims to expand and improve the historic displays within the Priory. These displays will cover village, Priory and St Bees School history and will be housed within the Priory, mainly in the Baptistery area, parts of the south aisle and a small area of the Lady Chapel.

One of the prime requirements of the project is that it must not interfere in any way with the peace and tranquility of the church frequently commented on by visitors, nor should it be forgotten that the Priory is first and foremost a working church.

Who is doing this?

Panel exampleThe project was conceived by the St Bees History Group and has the support of the St Bees Priory PCC. The “local” team is led by Ian McAndrew and Chris Robson, and includes Maureen Barratt, John Haile, John Kennedy, Lars Nowen, and Rosalie McAndrew, thus ensuring that the Vicar, PCC, Parish Council, and Friends of the Priory have a voice on the team.

The support of Hadrian's Wall Heritage has been secured and they will manage the project in partnership with the local team. Two companies have been appointed to undertake the work - r//Evolution, a marketing services company, and Oracle, which specialises in historic and archaeological interpretation. The “away” team comprises Marie Whitehead and Julie Sloan from Hadrian’s Wall Heritage, Gill Burgess and her colleagues at R//evolution, and Paul Frodsham through his company, Oracle. An application for funding has been made to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

A number of mainly local people (see below) with specialized knowledge on different aspects of village history have been identified who will act as “consultants” and help the design team with the content of the displays. Lastly, and by no means least, all villagers have been and are still invited, to contribute suggestions and comments both through the open meeting held at the end of January and through this web site.

Comments may be given to any one of the local team, left in the Priory or posted on the Village web site forum.

Preliminary work commenced in the autumn of 2007, and it is hoped that we will be able to formally open the exhibits in the autumn of this year.
