History Tours
of St Bees Priory

(Including light refreshments)

Over the years, members of the History Group have given visitors impromptu tours and talks about St Bees history, including the astonishing and unique find of
St Bees Man.

More recently these have become the basis of regular lectures given by Chris Robson and Ian McAndrew to local history groups, and to pre-arranged parties who visit the Priory, often as a preliminary to undertaking the Coast to Coast walk.

The full lecture, usually given to history and other groups lasts around an hour. It is in three parts - the history of the Priory, village and St Bees School; the finding and examination of St Bees Man - the almost perfectly preserved body from mediaeval times; and finally an outline of the investigative work that led to his identification.

When given to visitors to the Priory, whilst we cover the same topics, it is abridged to 20 - 30 minutes. The tour round the Priory lasts as long as people want it to, and we can provide light refreshments.

This abridged lecture is also given weekly at the Seacote Hotel to the regular bus parties that stay there.

All tours and lectures can be arranged as daytime or evening events.
