St. Bees Community Speed Watch – calling all residents!!!

When we conducted the recent Parish Survey of all households, one of the questions was “What would you most like to see changed and improved in St. Bees?” Speeding and illegal parking were the biggest issues you told us you wanted action on.

The traffic calming committee has been making good progress on this with the various partners involved, and a series of actions have taking place, including work on physical improvements (such as the completed chicane by St. Bees School, the new pavement on Outrigg and the work shortly taking place on the Egremont Road by the Fairladies estate), awareness and enforcement.

On the awareness and enforcement front, we’ve been working to establish a Community Speedwatch Scheme in conjunction with the Police for a number of months. Experience shows that these schemes are very effective in reducing speeding and dangerous driving. After what seems like a long haul of applications and rejections to various funding bodies we secured half of the funding and matched that with funds from the Parish Council budget to allow us to purchase an approved Speed Gun, and the Police are now ready to train our volunteers in how to use it.

A number of residents kindly came forward to register an interest in finding out about the scheme last year, and we now need to get as many volunteers as possible so that we can establish a regular presence in the village at the speeding problem areas.

We’ve secured training dates from the police in evenings and weekends to allow working volunteers to attend more easily.

The training dates available are:

Friday 30 th August 2013                                 5pm to 7pm

Saturday 14 th September 2013                    11am to 3pm

Sunday 15 th September 2013                      10am to 4pm

As a guide, around 1 hour of your time one a month is the minimum commitment, and we can fit around your availability. No prior experience is required – all the equipment and training will be provided.

So, if you do want to see people driving more safely and considerately through St. Bees, this is your chance to make a real difference. Please don’t wait for other people to do it – the scheme will only work if we make it work together.

Please email or phone Jane Donaldson, our Parish Council Clerk, with your details to let her know which training date you would like to attend. Jane can be contacted on 822560 or at pc_clerk@stbees.org.uk
