Jubilee Celebrations

The Parish Council and other organisations are making plans for this year's Jubilee celebrations.

A well attended open meeting was held on 28th Jan 2012

ST BEES DIAMOND JUBILEE MEETING

Notes of the meeting held on Sat 28 January 2012 at 10.00am in New College Hall

Present: S Moules, G Gilmour, K James, J Kennedy, S Kennedy, F Kennedy, T Kelly, I Hill P Turpin, J Kelly, H Sharpe, G Stokes, R McAndrew, W Mellor, A Smith, L Scott, S Servant C Swartz, N Lawton, P Barratt, D Sim, C Robson, K Nesbitt, D Robinson, E Smith, D Cockbain, D Amor, L Storey, R Scott.

Purpose of the meeting

Sean Moules, Chairman of the parish council, welcomed everyone to the meeting. He explained that the purpose of the meeting was to share ideas/plans for celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June 2012 and to establish a small group to co-ordinate events and organise central publicity. The parish council did not have the capacity to organise the events and hoped that groups and individuals would come forward to take forward the plans.

Background

The Jubilee celebrations would take place over the weekend of 2-5 June and there would be an additional bank holiday on Tuesday 5 June. There was a national initiative to encourage street parties (Big Jubilee Lunch) on Sun 3 June and to light a series of beacons across the country on the evening of Mon 4 June.

A number of ideas had already been put forward for local events and it was hoped to have something for all ages and sections of the community. The parish council had earmarked a sum of £2000 in its budget for 2012/13 which could be used as pump-priming for events and St Bees School had offered use of their facilities, if required, for wet weather contingencies.

The Whitehaven Festival would be taking place over the Friday/Saturday/Sunday with only the continental market continuing on the Monday.

Events & Activities

A number of suggestions for events and activities were put forward. The VSA sought views on bringing forward the village school fete to coincide with the Jubilee weekend. It was generally agreed that this would have a number of advantages.

It was also suggested that some lasting legacy should be provided as a reminder of the Jubilee. Suggestions included tree planting, statue/monument or flagpole. It was also suggested that there should be a village jubilee photograph and mugs could be provided for local children with designs by village school children, commemorative items for Coast to Coast walkers etc.

The following events were provisionally agreed and volunteers identified to organise most of these (see appendix):-

  • Village School fete – to be brought forward to Sat 2 June and evening BBQ event at St Bees School.
  • Jubilee Lunch – Sun 3 June (dependant on volunteers coming forward to organise)
  • Beach event (races, sand castle competition, children’s entertainment etc) – Sun 3 June pm
  • Lighting of beacon (& possibly E II R/ fireworks display) – Mon 4 June evening
  • Flower festival/displays by local groups and organisations – St Bees Priory – over several days
  • Tours of the Priory by Friends of the Priory
  • Thanksgiving Service in the Priory – Sun 3 June (10.30am tbc)
  • Village in Bloom Open afternoon at Stonehouse Farm – date tbc
  • Musical event – Tuesday 5 June (tbc) & Priory Singers concert (Thurs 7/Fri 8 tbc)
  • Other ideas – try to arrange for aircraft taking part in the Whitehaven festival to include St Bees in their flight path

Co-ordinating Committee

The following volunteers agreed to serve on the committee to receive ideas, co-ordinate events and organise central publicity:-

Grant Gilmour

Tom Kelly

Sally Kennedy

Helen Sharpe

Chris Robson

Next Steps

  • Parish Clerk to circulate lists of volunteers for each event
  • Groups to arrange to take forward the detailed planning for their event
  • Groups to liaise with the co-ordinating committee to avoid clashes of timings etc and to organise central publicity
  • Groups to channel requests for parish council funding through the co-ordinating committee
  • Ideas for long term legacy projects to be submitted to the co-ordinating committee
