St Bees Village & Priory History Project
Opened 24 June 2010

What is it?

Heritage Lottery Fund logoThe History project aims to expand and improve the historic displays within the Priory. These displays cover village, Priory and St Bees School history and are housed within the Priory. Detailed accounts of much of this history can be found in folders in the Priory and on the pages of this web site.

One of the prime requirements of the project was that it should not interfere in any way with the peace and tranquility of the church, something frequently commented on by visitors, and that the Priory is first and foremost a working church.

Background

The project was conceived by the St Bees History Group and was supported by the St Bees Priory PCC, the village Parish Council, both primary and secondary schools, as well as various individuals whose help and knowledge proved invaluable. A full list of credits can be found here.

The “local” team was led by Ian McAndrew and Chris Robson, and included Neville Denson, John Kennedy and Rosalie McAndrew, thus ensuring that the PCC, Parish Council, Villagers and Friends of the Priory all had a voice on the team.

The support of Hadrian's Wall Heritage had been secured early in the project and they managed the project in partnership with the local team. An application for funding to the Heritage Lottery Fund was successful, with a grant of £45K being awarded. We are most grateful for this grant as without it, the project would have been much more difficult.

The team will was aided and guided by Jo Scott-Heritage - Jo and her colleague David Patrick being the professional interpretation and design team.

A number of people, mainly local, with specialized knowledge of different aspects of village history, acted as “consultants” and helped the design team with the content of the displays.
