St Bees Village & Priory History Project What is it?
One of the prime requirements of the project is that it must not interfere in any way with the peace and tranquility of the church, something frequently commented on by visitors. Nor should it be forgotten that the Priory is first and foremost a working church. Who is doing this? The project was conceived by the St Bees History Group and has the support of the St Bees Priory PCC, the village Parish Council, both primary and secondary schools, as well as various individuals whose help and knowledge will prove invaluable. The “local” team is led by Ian McAndrew and Chris Robson, and includes Neville Denson, John Haile, John Kennedy and Rosalie McAndrew, thus ensuring that the PCC, Parish Council, Villagers and Friends of the Priory all have a voice on the team. However, this is a village project, so suggestions from villagers and village organisation, are not only most welcome, but are encouraged. The support of Hadrian's Wall Heritage has been secured and they will manage the project in partnership with the local team. An application for funding has been made to the Heritage Lottery Fund and we are delighted that this has been successful, with a grant of £45K being awarded. We are most grateful for this grant as without it, the project would have been much more difficult. The team will be aided and guided by Jo Scott-Heritage - Jo and her colleague David Patrick are a professional interpretation and design team. A number of people, mainly local, with specialized knowledge of different aspects of village history, have been identified who will act as “consultants” and help the design team with the content of the displays. Lastly, and by no means least, all villagers have been and are still invited, to contribute suggestions and comments through this web site or by direct approach to the local team. Comments may be given to any one of the local team, left in the Priory, posted on the Village web site forum or emailed directly to Ian McAndrew. Preliminary work commenced in late winter 2007, but due to a number of problems we did not get a grant until April 2009. It is hoped that we will be able to formally open the exhibits in the spring of 2010.
