The History of the Village History Project

The village history project was first considered in 2007, following a chance meeting between the then Director of Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Limited (HWHL) and Ian McAndrew. During their conversation, Ian told him several of the stories associated with St Bees – the legend of Bega, the founding of St Bees School by Archbishop Grindal, the Theological College and most recently the extraordinary find of St Bees Man.

As a result of that conversation, a further meeting was arranged between members of the village History Group and Marie Whitehead, of HWHL, who was then developing the “Hadrian’s Wall corridor” down the west coast of Cumbria. In turn this led to some initial funding from HWHL, a public meeting and some draft proposals for history displays. An application was made to the Heritage Lottery Fund and, after an initial setback, we were subsequently awarded a grant of £45,000.

Since then it has taken a long time to arrive at  the displays you see here today and many people and organizations have helped it happen.
