St Bees School
All pupils are allocated to a "House" which provides their base for study, accommodation and day to day care. Each house has a Housemaster or Housemistress who is responsible for the well-being of the pupils. Pupils are encouraged to take an increasing role in the management of their House as they progress through the school. Rugby and Hockey are the main winter team games; cricket, tennis and athletics in summer. In addition there are facilities for golf on the School's golf course, swimming in the indoor school pool, squash, plus many other sporting activities.
Art, Drama & Music have strong and lively traditions at St Bees. Very high quality exhibitions, concerts and plays are staged by the pupils each year. (Photo from St Bees School site). Examination options are available in Music and Art. A fully refurbished Music School opened in June 2000 which offers extensive teaching and practice facilities including a basement studio housing a 24 track digital recording studio. Whitelaw Building Health The pupils are cared for by two doctors, one of whom is female and has special responsibility for the girls. Two fully qualified nurses are employed as Matrons to deal with minor medical problems. The school is in an excellent location to undertake a wide range of outdoor pursuits - hill walking, climbing, abseiling, canoeing, navigation, camping, etc. In addition, the school has a Combined Cadet Force comprising Army and Royal Air Force Sections. The school buildings are all centrally situated within the village. Access to the sea, lakes and mountains, particularly the quieter and unspoiled western lakes, is readily obtained. Education for Life The school can be justifiably proud of its achievement in not only achieving excellent academic results, but in also teaching children through a variety of extra-curricular activities, to widen their interests and social skills. The school claims, with considerable justification, that St Bees pupils generally make a success not only of university, but of life in general.
