Archbishop Edmund Grindal of St Bees

Edmund Grindal was born and educated in St Bees and rose in the church ranks to become first Archbishop of York and then Archbishop of Canterbury, before falling out with Queen Elizabeth who did not agree with his liberal views. On his death bed he remembered his birthplace and the poorly educated people of the area and founded St Bees School.
